Position Summary

Responsible for the overall operations of the Clinical Perfusion and CV Surgery Research teams

Responsibilities

Evaluates the environment and makes recommendations to ensure optimal safety, patient comfort and compliance with various
standards of care, regulatory/governing bodies, infection control and risk management.
• Plans and coordinates quality and service activities for the team and is responsible for the overall culture of safety that exists within
the team.

• Analyzes, develops and maintains an effective and efficient perfusion delivery model that reflects patient needs and achieves desired
clinical outcomes.
• Leads the planning and implementation of new technologies, procedures and services to support daily operations.
• Develops and manages unit budget to respond in a cost effective manner to changing patient and team member needs.
• Applies key financial principals and organizations financial targets to projects and budgets.

• As it relates to the program of Clinical Perfusion at the facility, the Chief of Clinical Perfusion is responsible to the Chief of
Cardiovascular Surgery for the facility as it relatesto the organization and conduct of perfusion services. This will include:
o Evaluation and modification, when needed, of all perfusion protocols in accordance with discussions with the surgeons and
in support of new developments in the science and practice of clinical perfusion as garnered in professional meetings and
literature.
o Evaluation of the quality of care delivered by perfusionists at the facility through regular and direct observation of cases
performed by other perfusionists and sharing of these evaluations with the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery.
o Participation in the development and conduction of research to include publication of work.
• The Chief of Clinical Perfusion will also meet all clinical requirements of the Clinical Perfusionist role to include:
o Under the supervision of a physician member of the medical staff, the Chief of Clinical Perfusion will operate the heart-lung
machine in order to maintain the circulation and other organ functions perioperatively for the supervising medical staff
member’s patients that require cardiopulmonary bypass during congenital cardiac surgical procedures.
o Monitoring the supervising medical staff member’s patient’s hemodynamic and physiologic status perioperatively and
administer blood, blood products and any pharmacological support required to maintain the appropriate hemodynamic and
physiologic state.
o Setting up and operating the heart-lung machine for cardiac surgical procedures that require cardiopulmonary bypass
according to protocols prescribed by the supervising physician member of the medical staff.
o Reviewing medical records of patients of the supervising medical staff member.
o Notifying supervising medical staff member about unusual or unexpected events or problems related to above procedures.
o Maintaining appropriate records related to the above procedures.
o Transcribing verbal orders to be countersigned immediately by supervising staff member.
o Maintaining the perfusion/surgical database.
o Extracorporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary support
o Stand By on all closed heart procedures and for the catheterization lab as needed.
o Counterpulsation
o Circulatory support/ ventricular assistance
o CPS

 

Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Interprets, adapts and reacts calmly under stressful conditions.
• Manages various human resources functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching plans, and performance counseling.
• Maintainsreasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state
and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education/Training
Master’s Degree in Perfusion Science required. Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of directly related work experience may substitute for the Master’s degree (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section).

 

Licensure/Certification
• Current cardiovascular perfusion certification (CCP) with the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) – renewed annually.
• Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.

 

Experience
Five (5) years perfusion experience.
